Clarity, the award-winning provider of solutions designed to simplify the operations of communication service providers, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this month. Clarity’s founder, Tony Kalcina, reflects on the company’s successes and challenges and looks forward to see the future might hold for the industry.
Clarity was founded in February 1994 with just twelve employees. Its vision was to create a Unified OSS to replace individual teams working in separate silos, and replace systems that focused on technology instead of the customer experience. Clarity developed an early partnership with The Malaysian Telecom Company and it soon attracted customers across Asia and Australia, with multi-million dollar tenures being won at Taiwan Fixed Network, PLDT in the Philippines and Reliance Communications in India.
Clarity went from strength to strength as Unified OSS began to become more widely recognized as a more successful and cost effective solution instead of integrating many disparate systems. Over the last 5 years Clarity has expanded its focus from the core of Unified OSS, adding capability to support wholesaler management (Marketplace); network roll-outs and upgrades (Infrastructure Management) and more recently Customer Experience Management (Operational Intelligence). At the same time Clarity has invested heavily in its OSS product creating a modern User Interface designed from the ground up with user experience at the fore, resulting in several important assurance contract wins against industry heavyweights.
Tony Kalcina, Founder of Clarity, comments on the current market: “The focus of the OSS industry has shifted to customer experience and the exploitation of the mountains of data that have been generated by modern mobile networks. However the success of this approach will be dependent on the accuracy of the supporting OSS systems; and the vision that Clarity proposed 20 years ago is as valid as ever today. We are very proud to have been operating for 20 years – we believe it’s a testament to all the staff who have worked for Clarity over the years; as well as the loyalty of our customers that we are able to celebrate 20 years of Simplifying Operations.”
Looking ahead to what the future holds, Kalcina believes that that top priorities for operators over the coming years will be the ability to adopt their systems in order to support changes in network evolution and the new business models driven by over the top operators and other new players. The broader telecommunications industry is continuing to adapt; and while operators are still struggling with the strains on their networks caused by the mobile data explosion of the last 5 years; further changes are on the way that will force them to once again re-think their operating models and adopt their systems to support these new models. Technologies such as Small Cells, Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) will all necessitate a re-think in core systems architecture and place new demands on OSS solutions.
