In a groundbreaking collaboration, Nokia and Ooredoo Qatar have achieved a significant milestone by establishing the Middle East and Africa’s (MEA) inaugural private wireless network dedicated to the energy sector. This innovative project stands out as the first of its kind in the region, aiming to provide exclusive voice and customer data services in some of the most remote and challenging locations.
The cutting-edge solution, initially catering to 20,000 subscribers for the offshore grid, seeks to seamlessly connect offshore and onshore facilities. Its primary goal is to ensure uninterrupted voice and data services, allowing customers to embrace digitalization and automation for enhanced operational efficiency and productivity.
Nokia, at the forefront of providing resilient mission-critical connectivity solutions, will supply state-of-the-art products tailored for this project. The deployment includes expert support from resident engineers to guarantee optimal network performance.
The unique offshore system incorporated in the solution seamlessly integrates with the existing commercial core, offering dedicated connectivity to improve operational efficiency and reduce interruptions. The system also addresses interoperability and interservice handovers, facilitating smoother communication between offshore and onshore locations. By managing latency through localized data services, the solution enhances process efficiency and improves customer experience, replacing outdated Wi-Fi and WiMAX technologies.
Günther Ottendorfer, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Ooredoo Qatar, emphasized the project’s importance, stating, “This significant milestone underlines our commitment to transforming communication solutions for challenging environments. This landmark project provides dedicated voice and data services and paves the way for the oil and gas sector and others to replicate such solutions, marking a new era in connectivity for the industry.”
Samar Mittal, Vice President of Cloud and Network Services at Nokia MEA, highlighted the significance of the enterprise solution designed for offshore locations. “Through this partnership with Ooredoo Qatar, we are setting new benchmarks for innovation, efficiency, and reliability,” Mittal added.
Nokia’s track record includes deploying mission-critical networks for over 2,600 leading enterprise customers globally, spanning transportation, energy, large enterprises, manufacturing, webscale, and the public sector. With expertise extended to more than 675 private wireless customers worldwide, Nokia has been recognized as the leading provider of private industrial-grade wireless networking by industry analysts.
