Nokia and Telia Finland have announced the launch of the first commercial 5G standalone network (SA), with network slicing to provide Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), services. Telia will be offering 5G SA as part of its 5G Fixed Wireless Access home broadband services. It is also able to offer a variety of broadband deals that provide guaranteed service levels to customers in Finland. Telia will be able to leverage its leadership position to offer enhanced connectivity and capacity benefits for its customers with these solutions. The deployment is under way.
Nokia will upgrade Telia’s entire 5G Radio Access Network infrastructure through the deal. This will enable 5G slicing using equipment from its extensive AirScale portfolio, which includes baseband and 5G radio products. Nokia’s 5G AirScale network portfolio, which is the industry leader in energy efficiency and connectivity, supports mobile operators quickly transitioning to standalone 5G networks. 5G SA is the foundation of some of the most revolutionary 5G use cases, such as cloud gaming or extended reality.
Nokia 5G SA Core provides Telia with the speed, intelligence and scale to provide 5G services, while also cost-effectively managing its network using near zero touch automation and adhering to Service Level Agreements.
Telia will be able to dynamically allocate traffic from mobile users and FWA to 5G FWA. It can also provide new services such as application category-based slicing. Telia can offer customers a variety of broadband deals that include guaranteed service levels, as well as slices with different speeds, latency and data quality. The deal includes Nokia 5G FWA gateways. Telia will also use Nokia’s Carrier Aggregation technology to make the most of its 5G spectrum assets and improve coverage in key areas.
Nokia is Telia’s long-term strategic partner and the exclusive provider of 5G Core and RAN in Finland. Nokia is a long-standing strategic partnership with Telia Company. It also supplies 5G SA core to Denmark, Estonia and Finland.
Nokia is the industry leader for 4G/5G network slicing. It was also the first company to demonstrate 4G/5G network slicing through RAN-Transport Core with management and assurance. Nokia’s network slicing software supports all LTE, 5G NSA and 5G SA devices. This allows mobile operators to use a large device ecosystem and provides slice continuity over 4G or 5G.
